Overview
A problem with printing QuarkXPress and QuarkXPress Passport for Windows 4.1 documents to certain non-PostScript color printers has recently been reproduced by Quark Technical Support and reported to Quark R&D. Specifically, color elements in both new documents and old documents printed from QuarkXPress for Windows 4.1 to a color non-PostScript device output in grayscale instead of color. Depending on the individual printer, this problem can occur in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000.
Instructions
Installing a printer driver for a color PostScript printer
1. Go to Control Panel, double-click on the Printers icon then double-click on the Add Printer icon.
2. Click on Next, select Local Printer and click on Next.
3. Select a color PostScript printer to install from the list of included drivers, (the HP C LaserJet 4500-PostScript for example). You do not need to have the actual printer you are installing the driver for.
4. Click on Next. A screen listing the available ports will come up. Select FILE.
5. Finish the installation process. You will get a dialog asking if this printer should be the Windows Default Printer. Choose No.
6. A dialog window will open asking if you wish to print a test print. Choose No. Click on the Finish button to end the installation process.

Launching QuarkXPress 4.1 for Windows and printing the document in color to a non-PostScript printer
1. Launch QuarkXPress for Windows and open a document containing color.

2. Choose File > Print. The Print dialog will open.
3. Scroll down in the Printer field and select the color PostScript printer you just installed.
4. Click on the Setup tab then click on the down arrow at the right of the Printer Description field and choose "Generic Color" from the list of available PPDs.
5. Click on Capture Settings. This closes the Print dialog window.
6. Go to File > Print again and choose your installed non-PostScript color printer from the list of printers in the Printer field.
7. Make sure the printer settings are correct for your document and click on the Print button. The color QuarkXPress for Windows 4.1 document should now print in color.
The step of choosing a color PostScript printer and then Capturing Settings prior to printing to your installed non-PostScript color printer should be repeated if you exit from and then reopen QuarkXPress, and it may also be necessary when a new document is opened.
