Color Consortium) profiles on the magicolor 6100.
|

| |
| Overview |
| This technote is for anyone
new to color management or those who have questions about the ICC
profiles included with KONICA MINOLTA color products. It provides
basic instructions to setup host-based color management on the Macintosh
OS using ColorSync 3.0 (included with OS 9), and the KONICA MINOLTA
color profiles provided with magicolor products. |
| Instructions |
| With ColorSync
3.0 installed, you should have one Control Panel (ColorSync) and one
Extension (ColorSync Extension) installed by the Macintosh OS 9 installer
application. If you have extra Control Panels and Extensions with
the ColorSync name, use Get Info to determine if they are older version
of the ColorSync software. When
installing third-party software, some installer applications don't
check for the existence of ColorSync software or the current version
and install an older version. Remove all older versions of the ColorSync
software before you proceed. |
| To access the KONICA MINOLTA ICC profiles,
|
| 1) Using an Internet Browser
application, go to http://printer.konicaminolta.net/support/.
|
| 2) Choose magicolor 6100 from the
list, and then click Go. |
| 3) Choose the Macintosh link or scroll
down to the Macintosh Drivers/Utilities/PPDs Section. Here you can
find the ICC profiles for the magicolor printer you have chosen. |
| 4) Download the ICC profiles
to your computer. |
| Choose File
> Print. The Print dialog will open. |
| 5) After the profiles have been downloaded,
place the profiles in the ColorSync Profiles folder (located in the
System folder of the current start-up volume). |
| 6) Click on the Setup tab then click
on the down arrow at the right of the Printer Description field and
choose "Generic Color" from the list of available PPDs. |
| 7) Click on Capture Settings. This
closes the Print dialog window. |
 |
| 8) From the Apple Menu, select the ColorSync
Control Panel from the Control Panels folder. |
 |
| |
| If your ColorSync
Control Panel does not look like this, you may be using an older version
of ColorSync. Install OS 9 or visit
http://www.apple/colorsync.com
and download version 3.0 of ColorSync. |
| In the above screen shot of the ColorSync Control
Panel, there are two tabs: Profiles and CMMs. Listed under the Profiles
tab, there are a series of five pop-up menus, two of which are described
next. |
| 1.
Profiles for Standard Devices |
| This pop-up menu provides access to the two main
screens for the Profiles tab. Selecting Default Profiles for Documents
will change the current screen to this: |
 |
| |
| If you have a file containing an embedded profile
describing its specific color space, then the embedded profile will
be used. Otherwise, the above profile settings for Default Profiles
for Documents will be used. The profile settings of the Default
Profiles for Documents must be set correctly to ensure that the correct
color transformations take place and that accurate color can be viewed
and/or printed. |
| The above screen shot
displays the ColorSync 3.0 default settings. The following is a list
of recommendations for setting up these selections. |
| RGB Default: Normally a monitor profile
is selected. However, it can be another type of input profile such
as a scanner or digital camera profile. A monitor profile will be
used in most cases. If you're not sure what type of monitor you're
using, look on the back of the monitor to determine the model and
manufacturer. Locate this profile in the RGB Default pop-up menu or
use the Adobe Gamma control panel to create one. Third-party software
such as ColorBlind ProveIt! or ColorBlind Matchbox are two popular
software packages that allow the creation of input profiles |
| CMYK Default: This will always describe
the output device. Select magicolor 6100 from this list. |
| Gray Default: Only used in monochrome workflows,
this selection describes a black and white output device. As of this
Color Application Note release, KONICA MINOLTA does not provide monochrome
profiles for the magicolor product line. Generic Gray Profile
(default) is suitable for this selection. |
| Lab Profile: Lab is a device-independent
color space where the color transformation occurs. This color transformation
is the CMM (Color Matching Method, or Color Management Module) utilizing
the input and output profiles. In a sense, Lab is a reference space
used independently of the device-specific profiles. The profile, in
conjunction with the rendering intent, is what’s used to ensure
accurate color output. |
| 2. Profiles
for Standard Devices |
Input:
This pop-up menu allows you to select the
input profile of your input device (normally a scanner, monitor, or
digital camera). The profile for the input device should be loaded
into the ColorSync Profiles Folder, just like the profiles for the
magicolor 6100 printers. |
| A monitor can be selected as an input device,
since some graphic files are not scanned or captured with a digital
camera. An example of this is a file created in Adobe Illustrator
using a specific monitor profile to view the artwork as it’s
being created. The input profile gives the ColorSync CMM the
necessary information about the conditions in which the image was
captured or created. |
